Today’s Greatitude

Louis Riel was born on this day in 1844.  He was a Canadian politician, a founder of the province of Manitoba and led two resistance movements to defend Metis rights and identity as the Northwest Territories (as they were known then) came under the Canadian sphere of influence.

Historians have debated the Riel case so often and so passionately that he is the most written-about person in Canadian history.  In numerous communities across Canada, Riel is commemorated in the names of streets, schools, neighbourhoods, and other buildings.

On 19 February 2024, Riel was formally recognized as Manitoba’s first premier.
